Whistler plays host to the 2025 Invictus Games which is an international sporting event for ill and injured military servicemen and women.
The Invictus Games in Whistler and Vancouver
The Invictus Games were created by Prince Harry as a way to celebrate those who have served in the military, and provide a platform for those who were wounded or otherwise harmed in the line of duty to compete in sports.
Modelled after the Warrior Games in the United States, the first Invictus Games took place in London in 2014. They’ve since happened in Orlando in 2016, Toronto in 2017, Sydney in 2018, The Hague in 2022 and Düsseldorf in 2023. Now, in 2025, the Games come to Whistler and Vancouver! The two cities combine to host the event from February 8th to 16th.
The winning bid to host the 2025 Invictus Games was submitted jointly by the cities of Vancouver and Whistler, along with the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Lil’wat nations. Around 500 athletes from 20 different countries will participate.
Invictus Games Events
The 2025 Games are the first ones to include winter sports. All the sports are “adaptive”, which means they’ve been modified to better incorporate those with various disabilities or conditions.
The “core sports” that are at all Invictus Games are swimming, wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, indoor rowing and wheelchair rugby. In addition to those events, this year’s Games also include wheelchair curling, skeleton, alpine skiing & snowboarding, Nordic cross-country, and biathlon.
Nearly all of the winter sports happen in Whistler while the “core sports” all take place in Vancouver.
